Today, the television set, perhaps more than any other invention, is responsible for changing the interior configurations of modern homes. Not only does it determine the layout of living room, but it has also given rise to the concept of the family room - or audio - video room.

Usually, most family members are confused about the actual function of the living room. But even the five-year-old kid knows with certainty that the family room is for TV!

Which means that the TV should be the focal point and the seating system should revolve around it? However, a circle of seating systems would lack in aesthetics, and creating a more balanced arrangement could mean disadvantageous viewing angles for some members of the family.

To overcome this problem, you can try a seating system composed of independent comfortable chairs that can be moved as required, and one corner can have Indian-type seating with lots of soft cushions for comfort.

Of all the room in the house, the family room is likely to be used the most. Which mean it will also see maximum wear and tear. So think about using strong and study furniture and furnishing fabric; upholstery that is synthetic blend, tightly woven, mild to dark colored, preferably pattered, and strain resistant. The flooring should never be carpet but wood or laminate.

Window dressing should be dark in colour, using thick fabric so as to avoid reflection on the TV. Besides, thick fabrics add to the acoustical effects.

Lighting is important. Subdued light, just enough for proper visibility, would be more than adequate. But if this room also doubles up as a study room or library then it has to be properly lit with fluorescent lights.

If you have the inclination and the space to make this room a library as we,,, you can add a well designed bookshelf and one or two reading chairs with footrests. A good antique lamp shade can add charm to the décor.

Also, if it is a study, you will need a comfortable study table that can house a computer and allow at least two people (student and teacher) to use it at the same time. The table will also need adequate storage for books.

Finally, this room can also double up as a puja room.
